Property Investment in Montenegro 2008
Montenegro is one of Europe's newest independent states and one of its most exciting investment opportunities. With international tourism up by 19% for the first 9 months of 2007, high foreign investment creating a strong economy and EU membership a government priority, the demand for quality property both now and in the future is clear.
Montenegro became independent from Serbia in May 2006, the first time the country has stood alone in ninety years. Yet it is already making an impact as a tourist destination, with the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) quoting it as the "fastest-growing travel and tourism economy in the World". A total of 952,000 tourist arrivals came into the country in 2006 up 15.68% from 2005, with international arrivals up by 38.3%. According to the National Tourism Organisation of Montenegro, during the first 9 months of 2007, UK tourists increased by 11%, with an overall rise in tourist arrivals of 19% to 1.1 million tourists in total. No small achievement for a country with a population of just 620,000. Such an influx of foreign tourists creates the perfect conditions for property investment in Montenegro, as new accommodation is created to meet the demand.

The Budva Riviera has proved the most attractive area for investment, with everyone from multi billionaire Spiros Lacis to international film stars like Catherine Zeta-Jones joining the rush. However, there are also investment opportunities in the interior of Montenegro such as the areas around Lake Skadar and the old Royal Capital of Cetinje. These offer far lower prices, up to 200% less than coastal areas, yet they enjoy an ideal location not far from the sea, near the mountains, near the capital Podgorica, and surrounded by superb natural beauty. The well-known winter holiday resorts in the North: Bjelasica, near Kolasin, and Durmitor at Zabljak, also offer great potential for property investment in Montenegro.
