Minha Casa Minha Vida (My House, My Life) was launched by the Brazilian government in 2009 as a means of reducing the huge shortage of property in Brazil. This ambitious social housing programme aims to build 3 million homes for low-income families by the end of 2014.
As well as providing Brazilian families with the chance to get a foot on the property ladder, Minha Casa Minha Vida (MCMV) intends to reduce the chronic deficit of property in Brazil by more than 40% among low-income Brazilians.
The entire MCMV programme is financed by the government-owned Caixa bank. Caixa is Latin America's largest public bank and provides developers of MCMV projects with finance for construction and homeowners with mortgages.
This social housing programme also provides excellent opportunities for property investment in Brazil. Since autumn 2009, Obelisk International has launched four MCMV projects, totalling over 3,000 units.
Bosque das Colinas is situated south of the city of Parnamirim, near Natal in north east Brazil. With a population of 172,000, Parnamirim has a housing shortage and there are currently over 36,000 people on the waiting list for a home under the MCMV programme.
Obelisk International’s Bosque das Colinas project is building 400 detached houses. The developer, Estrutural, is the second largest in the area (second only to Cyrela, the largest real estate company in Brazil). The project has a value of R$36 million.
