Objectives
Minha Casa Minha Vida is one of the largest property investments in Brazil. With a government budget of R$100.6 billion, this ambitious social housing programme aims to build 3 million homes by the end of 2014 and reduce the housing shortfall for low-income Brazilians by over 40%. The target of contracting 1 million homes for the first phase of the programme has been met and the second phase (2 million homes) was launched in June 2011.
The principal objective of Minha Casa Minha Vida is to allow low-income Brazilian families to buy their own home. Properties are targeted at Brazilians earning between 0 and 10 times the minimum monthly wage (currently R$545). The Brazilian real estate programme has been hugely successful and is heavily over-subscribed throughout Brazil.
Funding
Finance from the government for the Minha Casa Minha Vida programme is provided through the government-owned Caixa Economica Federal bank. Caixa is the largest public bank in Latin America and leads the Brazilian mortgage market.
As the Minha Casa Minha Vida financier, Caixa provides funds for developers of social housing projects and mortgages for qualifying families. Qualifying families of the new Minha Casa Minha Vida homes receive preferential mortgages and tax exemptions or reductions.
